Gila Ridge baseball players and coach selected to Academic All-Star Game

The Gila Ridge High School baseball team earned three spots in this season’s Academic All-Star Game.

Joey Dressler and Gage McCloud were chosen to participate in the Arizona Baseball Coaches Association Academic All-Star Game. Also heading to the game will be Head Coach James Kuzniak, who was selected as a coach. Kuzniak is also coaching the 4A All-Star game the day prior.

The Academic All-Star Game participants are chosen by the AZBCA coaches and come from all levels of play from the 1A Conference up to 6A. Players are nominated and picked for these teams. Last season Ramces Urias of the Hawks was also selected.

“I am so happy for Joey and Gage to get the opportunity to play in this game,” said Kuzniak. “They both had outstanding seasons and were major contributors to our team. Having five players chosen to play over the two days and getting to be a part of it myself is truly an honor and I am excited to see all of our guys recognized on the state level.”

The Academic All-Star game will take place on Sunday, May 26, 2019 at 10 a.m. at Goodyear Stadium, the spring training home for the Cincinnati Reds and Cleveland Indians.

Overall, the Hawks had five seniors who will be playing in postseason All-Star Games, including three who take part in the 4A Conference All-Star Game on Saturday.

The Hawks finished the season 17-7 overall and 12-6 in AIA Powerpoint games on their way to winning the Arizona Interscholastic Association 4A Southwest Region Championship as well as a play-in round victory that advanced them to the 16-team 4A State Playoffs.
