SLHS students complete first-ever CTE Digital Communications Program
More than a dozen San Luis High School students have officially completed the new Career and Technical Education program, Digital Communications.
“It is amazing to see our SLHS students continue to take advantage of the great opportunities CTE offers,” said Nereida Lansman, SLHS Instructional Leader. “This year, the SLHS CTE department tested 536 students for the Certificate of Arizona Technical Skills Standards, which is the largest number of program completers for our school.”
As with all CTE programs, students are required to take a CTE Technical Skills Assessment, which is administered online by the Arizona Department of Education. Once a passing score is obtained, students officially earn their CTE letter and their certificate of Arizona Technical Skills Standards stating their official completion of the program.
Digital Communications is a relatively new Career and Technical Education program to Yuma Union High School District, and is only taught at SLHS. Launched in 2016, the program was originally three years long. After the first year, the Arizona Department of Education modified the requirement to two years. This first class of completers have committed three years of their high school education to building this program, and successfully passed their skills assessment.
“I am so very proud of my first year of completers for Digital Communications,” SLHS Digital Communications advisor Adrianne Wagner said. “It has been a learning experience for all of us. These students have worked very hard paving the way for incoming students, and set a standard by which future completers must uphold.”
Digital Communications is a program that teaches students the fundamentals of photojournalism. Students learn basic photography skills accompanied by basic journalism skills, which are practiced by writing stories about campus activities accompanied with journalistic photography.
