SLHS SkillsUSA named Gold Chapter of Excellence for first time
For the first time in school history, the San Luis High School SkillsUSA chapter, led by students Yanelly Munoz (Class of 2020) and Ludwika Curiel (2020), was awarded the Arizona SkillsUSA Chapter of Excellence Program (CEP): Gold Level of Distinction.
The SLHS SkillsUSA chapter was one of only 15 schools in the state to receive this prestigious award for the 2019-20 school year. The CEP recognizes achievement as it relates to the integration of the SkillsUSA Framework in chapter program of work activities. As a chapter’s yearly action plan, the program of work is at the heart of student learning and employability development. By using the Framework as a guide, chapters have a blueprint for creating relevant activities that encourage participation and foster an understanding of student learning attained during each activity.
“I am incredibly proud of my SkillsUSA Advisors, National Officers, and State Officers and the work they did last school year, as they continue to advocate and promote CTE,” SLHS CTE Instructional Leader and SkillsUSA Advisor Nereida Lansman said. “The Gold Chapter of Distinction was possible due to the robust CTE Students Leadership commitment and involvement.”
Using the Framework, the program of work becomes the vital conduit that links students to the application of personal, workplace and technical skills demanded by industry. The SLHS SkillsUSA Chapter achieved this award by coordinating, facilitating and conducting various events that include but are not limited to:
- Establishing student leadership tiered cohorts to advocate for CTE and SkillsUSA at the campus, community, district, state and national levels;
- Completing projects like the welding sculpture for AT Pancrazi Insurance Agency;
- Red Ribbon Campaign, which included: DEA and US Attorney’s office parent forum on creating an anti-drug shield at home, South Yuma County Anti-drug Coalition members setting up informative booth during lunches, participating in local parades to raise awareness.
“San Luis High has impressive student leadership, as evidenced by our representation at the regional, state and national levels of the SkillsUSA organization,” SLHS Assistant Principal David Barrios added. “This award acknowledges the hard work that students and advisors put in to forge partnerships and relationships with industry and community personnel. It's always great to see community involvement on campus and student involvement out in the community.”
San Luis High was home to multiple regional, state and national student leaders in SkillsUSA, including Melissa Moreno and Miguel Nunez who both ascended to leadership roles as national officers.
