CTE student leaders undergo training to prep for regional conference
Career & Technical Education student leaders from around Yuma Union High School District gathered on Wednesday, Aug. 28 at the district professional development center to prepare for the coming SkillsUSA Fall Regional Conference next week.
The more than 60 students, from all five comprehensive high schools, underwent training on public presentation, ice breakers, and group activities. The same group will be in charge of hosting CTE students from across the region on Friday, Sept. 6 as part of the annual fall conference.
"Every school is doing different sessions at the conference," San Luis High School student Mariana Flores said. "We are planning things so we can get students engaged in the regional conference. While some students are doing sessions, others will be performing their speeches for running for regional office."
While a portion of the role of a CTE student leader is to conduct leadership activities for their fellow students, they also serve as advocates for CTE and their individual programs.
"We like to spread the idea of CTE and how it helps us and students get ready for industry work," Kofa High School student Luis Rodriguez Rosales said.
As an example, students who take part in an automotive class would be working with tools and parts that would immediately allow them to transition into the auto industry; or students interested in the field of athletic training through their sports medicine classes would work directly with athletes and learn the skills necessary to continue in the field in the future.
