More than 100 graduate from Cibola’s ASU American Dream Academy
Cibola High School graduated more than 100 combined parents and students in the American Dream Academy program through Arizona State University on Tuesday, Oct. 29, 2019.
"This program was a counselor's dream," CHS counselor and teacher in the program Kevin Swearingin said. "It was an honor to have both parents and students together learning about what it takes to apply to college and how to seek out financial resources to pay for it."
The academy empowers ASU, teachers, and parents to transform each student's expectations and learning methods so that they can achieve their greatest academic potential.
Both students and parents met once a week for eight weeks to talk through program specifics, such as college applications, student financial resources, letters of recommendation, admission essays, and specific assistance programs at ASU. Graduation from the program required attendance at all eight sessions.
"Thanks to the American Dream Academy, I am sure that many students will feel more confident in themselves and will become whatever it is they want to become," said program participant Vicente Guerrero.
Four Yuma Union High School District campuses are hosting American Dream Academy sessions during the first semester of the 2019-2020 school year. Last year, more than 800 families completed the program between San Luis, Cibola, Kofa and Yuma High.
