YUHSD CTE leaders attend gubernatorial inauguration
Yuma Union High School District Career & Technical Education student leaders were invited to Arizona Governor Doug Ducey’s inauguration on Monday, Jan. 7, 2019 at the state capitol.
More than two dozen CTE students from YUHSD schools attended the event and served as advocates and ambassadors for their programs, the school district and the Yuma community.
“Going to see the governor's inauguration was a valuable experience that I am extremely grateful for,” Cibola High School student Kaelyn Jameson said. “I really enjoyed hearing the plans for our future as a state. I enjoyed being able to listen to all of the speeches and seeing the inauguration process itself. I especially enjoyed being able to speak to different community members in our state to promote our programs. I handed out fliers and answered questions on how our programs can be beneficial to not only students, but for all community members. Getting to see other CTE programs from the state and getting to meet other people in different programs enhanced my appreciation of our CTE programs within YUHSD.”
YUHSD has 72 CTE programs in six high schools, ranging from law and public safety to culinary arts to welding. Since 2015, enrollment in CTE courses has increased nearly 200 percent with more than 7,700 students enrolled in at least one CTE class for the 2018-19 school year. That number makes up 70.9 percent of YUHSD’s student population.
