Five YUHSD chess players advance to state finals
Five Yuma Union High School District students will compete for the Arizona Interscholastic Association individual state championship in chess on Friday, Nov. 22 and Saturday, Nov. 23.
The event, which features a 64-player field from five regions across Arizona, will take place in the Yuma Catholic High School gymnasium. Three rounds occur Friday and three additional rounds on Saturday, beginning at 9 a.m. Awards will take place at approximately 5 p.m. following the completion of the sixth and final round.
Kofa High School won the regional team championship this year, and had two players advance to the finals: Cristian Gutierrez and Juan Ruan. San Luis High School’s Angel Monroy and Yuma High School’s Luis Flores and Daniel Lopez-Gonzalez also qualified for the field. Jesus Lopez-Gonzalez, from Yuma High, was named an alternate.
