SLHS student named semifinalist for prestigious scholarship

Oscar Lopez Fimbres San Luis High School senior Oscar Lopez Fimbres has been named as a semifinalist for the prestigious Gates Scholarship.

The Gates Scholarship is a highly selective, last-dollar scholarship awarded for exceptional, Pell Grant eligible, minority high school seniors. Beginning in 2018, the scholarship is awarded to 300 student leaders each year across the United States with the intent of supporting their academic excellence through college graduation, and providing them the opportunity to reach their full potential. Gates Scholarship candidates must be in the top 10 percent of their graduating class, demonstrate leadership ability through community service and extracurricular activities, and have exceptional personal skills.

“I feel good and excited,” Lopez said about being considered. “It is an inspiration to keep working hard to apply to other scholarships and to fulfill my goal of becoming a computer engineer one day.”
