YUHSD leaders provide data snapshot as part of Governing Board study session
Several Yuma Union High School District leaders presented to the district’s Governing Board on Wednesday, Aug. 26, 2020 as part of a board study session and special meeting.
The intent of the presentation, which was centered on data from various departments, was to provide insight to the board about the first month of distance learning. All six high schools in the district have been taking part in remote classes since school started on August 6 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
“We have elite leaders and professionals employed at every level,” YUHSD Superintendent Gina Thompson said during her opening statement to the board. “They cannot be admired or commended enough for their professionalism, and dedication to students and families in forms of hours in work and learning and deep personal sacrifice for themselves and their own families.”
Through nearly four weeks of class, YUHSD has seen enrollment exceed 11,500 students, an increase of more than 350 students from 2019-20. According to data from the week of August 10-14, the district has a 95.7 percent attendance rate and more than 23,700 grades have been posted since school began.
“Students, using this schedule that we are in now, are posing many more questions to their teachers and having meaningful discussions with classmates,” Cibola High School Instructional Leader Monique Manifold said. “The multiple ways that they can engage in class discussions and messaging their teachers is providing students with a feeling of both freedom and reliability. Because of all of this, students seem much more answerable for their own success. No longer are they dependent upon the teachers for all of the materials, but they are owning the experience of their education and becoming more responsible learners.”
Here are some other key data points shared during the study session:
- The district acquired 500 hotspots for students without internet access.
- More than 3,800 Career & Technical Education students are enrolled in industry certification training.
- The student nutrition department has served 13,876 no-cost meals from Aug. 6-25.
- Working in partnership with Dr. Ryan Zerr and Yuma Regional Medical Center, schools have provided families with 234 no-cost athletic physicals.
