Gila Ridge Academic Instruction students tour AWC
A group of 14 Gila Ridge High School juniors and seniors spent last a day touring Arizona Western College with their Academic Instruction class.
The students were given the opportunity to speak with AWC’s Accessibility Department and ask a variety of questions, including those about student accommodations. Students with IEPs (Individualized Education Plans) benefitted from touring many areas of the campus such as the dorms, tutoring center, childcare center, and even purchased lunch for the first time in the AWC Dining Hall.
“AWC was a wonderful eye opener for our students,” said GRHS Academic Instruction teacher Eva Gilbert. “I hope to see more special education students be interested in pursuing a degree or certificate after graduation.”
The AWC tour is just one of the many opportunities students in Academic Instruction are receiving to prepare them for life after high school. In December, Courtesy of Elite Community Services, 85 students participated in a three-day workshop on job skills training. This workshop covered resume building, filling out job applications, and interview skills taught by representatives from the organization.
